| The Islamabad Marriott Hotel is no more. Islamabad – the beautiful, has turned into Islamabad – the miserable. I am deeply shocked and sad to see what has happened at Islamabad. It is a colossal tragedy of unmanageable proportions. When I first saw these horrific images on the television, a shudder ran through my spine recollecting that I stayed there with my friends in the last week for three days. |
The Islamabad incident while highlighted monumental security lapses and loopholes in the country, it also raised questions about efficiency and professionalism of country’s disaster management infrastructure. The search and rescue capability of our civic agencies needs to be completely overhauled. Usman Manzoor reported in The News: “The Capital Development Authority (CDA), like Nero of Rome, was playing the flute when its icon of security, The Marriott, was burning in the heart of the capital”. |
“Saturday’s blast not only exposed the fire-fighting unit of the civic authority but also raised fingers at the high officials of the CDA and the cabinet division whose negligence left Marriott burned down completely. According to well-placed sources, the civic body had spent Rs 600 million on fire-fighting equipment but due to the contractor, who was to supply the fire-fighting equipment to the CDA, did not do so in three years and the hotel was reduced to ashes on Saturday night”, he added. |

This bomb blast would badly affect the Pakistan’s economy. It was also a big blow for foreign investment in the country, as foreigners would feel more insecure to invest in Pakistan. The economy was already in deep trouble as all macro economic indicators were showing negative trend and country direly needed foreign investment to cope with the current economic challenges for which business friendly, peaceful and secure environment was essential. But suicide bombing attacks and other acts of terrorism would deter the foreign investors from coming to Pakistan, which would further weaken our economy. |
After this incident I received an email of my friend who is Director Human Resources Asia Pacific, at a multinational bank based in Singapore. He wrote: “It is with much regret that I must inform you, that given the unfortunate recent bombing in Islamabad where terrorists once again targeted a business hotel; I have received strong advice from my functional leadership and the Bank’s Corporate Security division to cancel my trip to Pakistan for now”. |
| I invited him at our International Conference on October 22-23, 2008 at Karachi. Four other international speakers from Germany, Australia, Malaysia and US also refused to visit our country after this tragic incident. |
The Marriott’s bombing was one of the worst terrorist attacks the country has witnessed since it joined the US-led war on terrorism in 2001. 9/11 in US just lasted for one day only but after that, it is seven years down, that one day of 9/11 for us has not yet finished. |
I urge the President and Prime Minister that they should build up a consensus by involving all political parties and other stakeholders to make a comprehensive and home-grown strategy to deal with the menace of suicide bombing and other acts of terrorism. |

May Allah give us all Hidiath to shun revenge and instead value human life – It is definitely not ours to snuff out that which Allah has created. If I could weave my words… In a laurel for each feat… And for every act of courage… I could place a gilded leaf… If for every silent offering… You gave in sacrifice… A wreath of honor… Could be made… It never would suffice… It could never match the gift… You gave with strength and grace… Or the depth of your commitment… For the freedom we embrace… If I could weave these words… In an honored, golden wreath… I’d add each leaf in reverence… Then I’d lay it at your feet… (Sharon Frye, Memorial Day 2007) The writer is the President, Regional Center for Research and DIALOGUE and CEO, Nutshell Forum. |
