The death toll due to continued monsoon rains in Pakistan rose to 1,600 on Saturday, government officials claimed, as tens of thousands of people are still trapped in flooding waters that submerged dozens of villages across Pakistan.
Nadeem Ahmed, head of the National Disaster Management Authority, said that the north-western province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and central province of Punjab had suffered most. Ahmed said 650,000 houses were damaged or destroyed and the country would need $2.5 billion for relief and rehabilitation after the worst floods in the country’s history.
