Celebrating Eid ul Azha – the festival of sacrifice

November 29th, 2009 Arsalaan 3 comments

eid_mubarakEid Ul Azha, or the ‘festival of sacrifice’, an important festival in the Islamic Calender that marks the end of the Annual Pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, known among the muslims as the “Hajj”.

During this three-day festival, muslims are mandated to slaughter designated animals such as sheep, goat, cows, and camels – depending on the availability and cultural norms of the region. All other animals’ sacrifice is forbidden during this festival.

This ‘sacrifice’ is carried out in commemoration of Prophet Ebrahim’s (Abraham) (PBUH) readiness to sacrifice his son to show obedience to God. But just as he was about to run the knife over his son’s throat, the son was promptly replaced by a sheep, and thus, this is how, or rather, why Muslims carry out this ritual.

Transcendent beauty: St Andrew’s Church – Karachi

Munawwar Maseeh is an unassuming, taciturn kind of a man. He is the gardener /gatekeeper at St Andrew’s Church in Saddar, Karachi. He’s been serving this place of worship for several years. He is even fond of the pigeons that often merrily perch themselves on the church gables like star-crossed lovers and the squirrels that scurry across the semi-verdant lawns to evade prying eyes. st-anthonys-church4.jpg
Munawwar Maseeh has a 19-year-old son, Andrew Munawwar, who is a second-year commerce student at a local college. Unlike his father, he likes to converse in a relatively buoyant manner. If you happen to visit the building and bump into Andrew, he’ll gladly help you get acquainted with the church premises.

On Friday evening I heard the news that there was a massive raining in Mumbai and the whole city went flooded. I thought how could a huge city can be flooded like this.Same day at night in Pakistan we had some little drizzling which Karachi hites enjoyed that very much. The drizzling went for a day and in the morning it was beautiful all over the place.
On Saturday evening at around 9:30PM rain started again with a different way, firstly we enjoyed the rain, I sat on Face book and noticed people changing their status to “It’s raining, I am enjoying the rain” and similar to this, then came the answer to my question how could a big city like Mumbai be flooded? God gave the answer by showering his blessings. All the previous records which include 205mm of rain were broken down with 225mm this year.Roads were full of traffic jam and by the grace of K.E.S.C light went off instantly. No lights on road and cars were moving in all directions. With this excess of rain all the communication medium went off. Cars, buses, motor bikes all were jammed in every corner of the city. City of lights was seriously suffering with no lights.
On Sunday also it was difficult for people to move anywhere, water was on the road and up till now there was no sigh of electricity. As compared to previous rain water was less on the roads. But it was a hectic weekend for whole Karachi hite. Anyways I hope and pray that in future we can enjoy heavy rain like this with some effective drainage system.
