Sorry no free lunch here! Automotive Giants bail out?

This advertisement came to me via e-mail and seemingly has been posted over the internet on various sites and blog posts.

The dilemma of US automotive industry is both relevant and impact full to Pakistanis especially those living in North America. Hundreds if not thousands of Pakistani engineers work in the automotive industry (in Midwest and in particular within the Detroit metro area). Any friends get together in Detroit area turns into a class reunion for of sorts (Especially NEDians are in hundreds). Every batch of mechanical engineers from major universities of Pakistan has a representative group of 30-40 or even more engineers based in the region. Across North America there must be several hundred engineers of other trades working in the manufacturing industries related to automotive. Many are my personal friends and the stories of what has happened to their life plans in past 5 years and would likely happen in next five is nothing to cheer about. I have written about this in the past and it saddens me to see the predictions coming true (Read the previous blog- Rest in peace-Demise of GM Ford and Chrysler ) the-bailout-shitty-cars.gif

So a collapse of any of the Big-3 automotive companies namely, GM, Ford and Chrysler (though all three are candidates) would truly be disastrous for so many individuals. But it is both sad and alarming to note that this advertisement is summarizing the way most Americans feel about the automotive bailout program. Between the greedy unions and company executives this whole ordeal has left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.

Many view the bail out as a reward offered by the US government for bad business practices, worsening manufacturing culture and almost zero focus on responsibility and corporate vision. Yes we will bail them out by giving them money but in return what type of motivation are these companies going to have to create better products or run leaner?

.Any sensible analyst and reasonable businessman would estimate a six month delay in the ultimate outcome if we move ahead with this bail out. Many are giving GM three to four months before they come back to congress to ask for more money. And the UAW Union which for many represents the reasons for this debacle is not stepping back. Here is an eye opener..

Employees at GM have historically taken average salaries/benefits in upwards of $125,000 and under a special job bank program have gotten paid at times for weeks with out working. A bail out would continue to pay for such ‘highly productive ideas’ is the question we must ask.

As for Pakistani engineers working in the sector, it’s a double whammy. No bail out takes away their earnings now… and a bail out takes away their tax dollars now and then ultimately their jobs would go any way… My advise ( as one of my friend did the right thing last month) take the golden handshake, buy out whatever you get… don’t worry or count on any results coming out of a bail out (should one happen)…. Get out and run in the opposite direction as fast as you can…

And like one blogger wrote… “To all the Auto Workers and Manufactures, Congratulations for doing a terrible job! You don’t deserve a dam thing for making shitty cars that no one wants.”
