Ah! It is that time of the year, when the sweet love fills the air and when the members of the fairer sex eagerly await the arrival of the courier.

Yes, soon it will be Valentine’s Day.A day when lovers express their love for their beloved by sending them either boxes of chocolates or bouquets of roses – more specifically RED ROSES.

From the time immemorial, red rose has signified love and affection. During the time of ancient Greeks, the red rose was considered holy, as it was associated with Greek Goddess Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love and Affection.
Later on with the Valentine’s Day latching onto the western psyche, the significance and corresponding demand of the red rose increased, resulting an increase in the popularity of its  ‘varied cousins’ as well.
Mentioned below are some of the popular roses and their significance.

Red Rose or Valentine Rose
Red rose symbolizes romantic love, hence, its world-wide popularity. Due to this very reason, it is often the most expensive flower sold from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.
Pink RoseNot so ‘in-demand’ as its red cousin, but quite popular. It symbolizes gentle love and respect
White RoseWhite is often considered a sign of ‘purity’. For this reason, white roses are used at weddings and burials in both Eastern and Western societies. While red roses symbolize romantic love, white rose represents true or pure love.
Yellow RosesDespite its dull colour, Yellow Rose signifies freedom and joy and often presented as a symbol of friendship.
Peach RoseIts significance falls somewhere between that of pink and yellow roses. It also represents true love and friendship.
Orange Rose
These are considered to represent desire for the beloved. These are normally genetically engineered offsprings of Red and Yellow roses.
Purple Rose
Purple rose represents the love of another kind – maternal love or paternal love.

Black Rose
Not very commonly available, the black rose symbolizes the opposite of what its other cousins represent – the parting of ways or simply breaking-up with the beloved.

Next Saturday, 14th Feb is St. Valentine’s Day
