Top Ten Movies of Bollywood in 2009

December 29th, 2009 Aman No comments

The year 2009 in Bollywood saw some good movies but very few managed to set the cash registers ringing at box office. The first hit of the year was the edgy Dev D, Anurag Kashyap’s modern version of Sarat Chandra’s classic love tale ‘Devdas’. But after that box office couldn’t warm up to better collections and, to make things worse, there was a producer’s strike for many months of the first half of 2009.

Yet, most of the films that released afterward tanked or managed just average business. Worst was the debacle of big-budget movies like Kambakkht Ishq, Kurbaan, Blue and London Dreams. In the year when more than 90 per cent of the films were declared flops, silver linings came in the form of Wanted, New York and Love Aaj Kal among others.

Here are top ten Bollywood films (in the order of their release) that catered to our entertainment needs and emerged successful at ticket windows.

Meera’s unsolvable Problem.. isn’t it?

December 21st, 2009 Aman 2 comments

This blog first appeared on http://blog.dawn.com on Nov 19th 2009 and is by Shahrezad Samiuddin. Shahrezad Samiuddin is a freelance writer.

How do you, indeed? Meera does the rounds via SMS jokes about her English. Meera helps a damp squib sink to the bottom of the Indian box office. Meera’s alleged husband turns up demanding his house and crores back. Meera predicts she’ll be linked to Musharraf and Clinton next (you wish, M). Meera is the opposite of Humayun Saeed, says Mahesh Bhatt with tongue in cheek. And most recently, Meera interviews photographer Tapu Javeri in her very own talk show.

If, after seeing that clip, you cringed and wrote ‘Not funny,’ or ‘Not her language’ under the link on Facebook, this blog is for you. And if you hooted and laughed, read ahead anyway.

Waheed Murad: Pakistani cinema’s greatest chocolate hero

November 23rd, 2009 Arsalaan 2 comments

Waheed MuradDecades after films such as Armaan and Doraha were released, the debonair Waheed Murad remains a treat to watch. An exceptional actor who had a screen presence that his leading ladies envied, Lollywood’s quintessential chocolate hero died 26 years ago today.

The early death of this educated and talented actor and producer was one of the major blows to an industry that now lies gasping for air. Murad was born on October 2, 1938, in Karachi and news of his death on November 23, 1983, left many eyes brimming with tears.

Barrie Osborne movie on muhammad

Oscar-winning producer Barrie M. Osborne is best known for fantastical films employing messianic characters, specifically “The Matrix” and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Lately though, he’s focusing directly on religious material rather than stories that reference those texts. Osborne is already at work on “Kingdom Come,” a Biblical epic about the life of Jesus, which will be directed by “Lord of the Rings” visual effects artist Dean Wright. And now, according to The Guardian, he’s planning a $150 million film about Muhammad, the founder of Islam.

One Night Only – Dream Girls – the movie (2006)

October 22nd, 2009 medigineers No comments

I know most of us are not the diehards ‘oh yes!’ sort, on Hollywood musicals. But every once-in-not-so-many years Hollywood produces a musical block buster. Dream Girls (2006) is one spectacular movie musical experience!

dreamgirlsBased on long running hit Broadway musical with the same name, the movie is a love triangle of two females singers played by Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce and a male singer / producer  Jammei Fox. It is a story of this trio of black female soul singers who crossover to the pop charts in the early 1960’s. The movie is all about the struggle for success, quest for love and then the eventual fall from grace.

When I watched this movie on my 40-inch TV screen at home, I was so blown away by the sound tracks, the songs and the overall handling of the screenplay. I was so blown away from it all that I watched the film twice in one sitting, and at the end ended up watching the songs two more times.

Meera Unplugged

September 13th, 2009 medigineers 3 comments

meera-front-page-003Bollywood and Hollywood controversies always create a stir and provide enough masala to get the buzz going; on the other hand, Lollywood scandals and stories usually have some humor value at the most. Recent scandal about wedding, (or not), of Lollywood’s (that unsuccessfully attempted to cross to Bollywood) diva, Meera, created some stir on the media and the social network sites. Some of you, I am sure, may have seen the video embedded in this blog-post, so did I, as posted by a friend on his face book page.

I am not going to go over the authenticity of the ‘yay’ or ‘nay’ in the scandal. What made me start typing and clicking on my laptop is the first minute of the interview. Madam Meera in her desperate attempt to gain sympathy (read: credibility) of the media folks is seen here creating a parallel between herself and Hollywood stars such as Angelina Jolie and Madonna.

Nusrat Fateh- The Maestro; The Legend: 1948-1997

August 17th, 2009 medigineers 1 comment

Although a qawwal (mystic singer), Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan can truly be described as one of the greatest musical prodigies of our times. He is the pioneer of an individualistic style which blended classical music with contemporary music. On the death anniversary (Aug 16th) of Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the legend, before I pen down some facts and some history, let me begin with this classical qawali praise rendered by Nusrat Fateh to set the baseline of what he was to the original true version of ‘qawali’, his class in understanding and mastery in any/all genre of music and the reason why gurus from east to west considered him an authority in the field.
