Once in a life time a generation is given an opportunity to witness the history in making. We all have heard stories from our parents and grandparents of the partition and migration from then Indian-Subcontinent, to present-day Pakistan; the landing of the first man on the moon; the JFK’s assassination; surrender of Pakistan army in then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Those were the living history moments for past generations. But this generation – our generation – hasn’t lived a historic moment of that proportion in decades that we remember. What happened on Nov 4th 2008 is arguably the most significant moment of our life-time, and of the generation that is 6 yrs old now, but would live and engage with the future history that is being written. I feel what this moment truly entails is yet to be realized to its fullest effect. Triumphs of those who are less fortunate or less significant have been recorded in recent memory with crowning of people of color or minority or the ‘other’ gender. Examples of Nelson Mandela’s splendor rise from the gallows to almost legendary status, and Benazir Bhutto’s historic election in 1988, a true significant event in the annuals of Pakistan’s history, are among those.

The world’s economy facing its greatest despair for over a century, lives and possessions of millions in danger on far reaches of the world, and relations and interactions of long term allies and enemies are in new undefined territories.

As the race for fight house closes in to the finish line… both candidates are in the middle of a furious battle that is testing their characters and defining their lives. The message of change in this election that has resonated from California to New York and from Michigan to Florida and beyond that to far off countries across oceans has seen the reemergence of what leadership and election of a president in any nations should be about- one word “Leadership.”

On countless appearances of Obama on hundreds of cable news programs, we have seen him making the case for change and hope in most eloquent and ‘hopeful’ manner not seen in last half of a century or before. In conversations taking place over office water coolers, coffee shops and restaurants or at the informal gatherings such as friends get-togethers during weekends across the country, people are asking the same question over and over again…. How far to believe the promises of hope and message of change..?

I want to say here that while it is indeed a tall order for many to comprehend the idea that ‘one man can make the difference’, a look into the near past reveals that the history of our planet earth is filled with examples of leaders who delivered on hope and inspiration. It is the way of the creation. Every once in a while mankind comes across a fellow from within who has the philosophy, the vision, the skill and the judgment to give an accurate call for action and the acumen to execute on that action. This, my friends, is the definition of a leader. You may also call this a blue-print for leading corporations, countries and nations towards success.

History of religions (all major religions including Islam, Christianity et el.) are full of examples of leaders who inspired (of course to perfection by the prophets). But from caliph Omer, to Salahuddin to Sir Syed if you look at the Islamic history for example, or from Thomas Jefferson to Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King, if we talk about the history of United States, what we learn is that there will always be one unique individual who will deliver beyond his own calling, who will understand the need of time and would present the case for reforming the destiny of a nation as an exact science. To me, Senator Obama falls in the same league of great men and women.

I have watched many of his speeches and discussions and debates. The man is a genius, and what separates him and puts him ahead of someone such as ZA Bhutto (who had many of the leadership traits listed in this article) is his humility. I often say leaders are born. … and then their surroundings nurture them to take charge. Some realize their own true potential and the opportunity that waits them.
Mainstream media from CNN to Fox to Washington post continue to call this race a close one some even suggesting that McCain would eventually emerge winner in many ‘blue’ states; nothing could be further from the truth in my eyes.

Here are some glimpses of what’s happening on the ground. One candidate is pulling crowds of 30 to 40 thousand in his rallies compared to the other who is struggling to fill a road side cafe, Obama is a Rock-Star is what a close friend who is not a democratic supporter told me when he went to hear him in a rally in New Hampshire; One candidate is staying in the middle on all issues and the other is pulling on the sides enough to almost go over the edges on the ‘Right’, elections are won and lost in America by voting of the middle 30% of the voters with 35% registered to their parties remaining loyal on each side; One candidate has picked a VP candidate who is more qualified (to be the President, should the need arise) then even himself in some ways and the other’s choice of VP is making his own party members switching sides, Colin Powell and many others have crossed part lines and endorsed the democratic candidate Barak Obama citing Sara Palin’s candidacy a colossal judgment error on McCain’s part.

Question is then why the common man on the street or the world media calling this a race too close to call. Is it because the man of the moment has ideas that are so new that they would be a huge departure from the past or is it because a change from within is always looked at with skepticism or is the disbelief that time has come for a man of Color to take the most powerful job in the world and finally throne the ‘White’ House. I think its all of the above.

Many of my friends who live around the world an continue to ask me the one obvious question, “so who will win the 08 race’.. My answer to them is always… “Obama should score at least a 60-40 win if not a 70-30. Any thing else could only be a logical result of a process marred with errors, irregularities or a classic display of racial bias in the often regarded best of the best modern society.Pundits on major TV channels referring to Obama’s fate on the election day haveeven talked about what is called a Bradley Affect named for Tom Bradley, an African-American who lost the 1982 California governor’s race despite being ahead in some voter polls.

So my friends yes, I am saying this… The race for white house this time around is a test for America to show the world its true colors (no pun intended). Yes America is red, white and blue but it is also green and yellow and Black! Time has come to ascertain if both the establishment corridors of the powerful and the inner beliefs of the core masses that populates these cities and rural towns, have what it takes to face the truth. Any deliberate attempt to undermine this history in the making could prove disastrous for not only the new World but also the Globe connected. The Decision 08 for the USA is indeed a major one for it will determine the outcome of so many policies and issues that await but make no mistake… This race is for the Race!
