Mango Lassi

Benefits Of Mango

If you never had the pleasure of sipping mango lassi or had the taste of fresh mango chutney do not forget to have it this summer. The mango fruit has been cultivated in Asia for thousands of years. Not only the foods made of mango have a delicious taste, but they are highly nutritious and healthy. Therefore mango is also known as a super fruit. The numerous benefits of mango are:

1. Helps to boost the body immunity.

Mangoes contain high quantities of beta-carotene a carotenoid that is abundantly present in carrots also. This constituent of mango is helpful in enhancing the immune system of the body and making it strong. Beta-carotene is then converted to vitamin A inside the body. Vitamin A is an antioxidant vitamin and protects the body against the many free radicals that harm the internal system. It thus help to prevent many diseases.

2. Acts as an anti aging food.

Mangoes contain high quantities of vitamins A and vitamin C. Vitamin C plays a significant role of aiding the production of collagen protein inside the body. This helps in preserving the blood vessels and body connective tissue, thus slowing down aging process of the skin.

Eating out: Getting chili

February 28th, 2011 Yousuf Rafi No comments

Chili WiliAsk most trendy Karachiites where all the best restaurants are and they would undoubtedly come up with spots in Defence, Clifton or Zamzama. But nestled in the heart of Dhoraji is a gem that might quickly become the poster child for quality on the side of town that is more appreciated for its practicality than its style. With a deliberately catchy name and bright sign to boot, Chili Wili, has brought fine dining closer to this part of town.

The interior is cosy, the ambience welcoming and the menu full of tempting treats. For appetizers one has a choice of the usual favorites — salads (with or without chicken), buffalo wings, chicken fingers, et al — though the complimentary serving of nachos and salsa is quite enough for a starter. The nachos aren’t the typical triangular assortment but a shorter, thicker and more four-sided affair; suffice to say, the experience is reminiscent of a slogan for a brand of chips: you can’t eat just one.

Lal QilaLal Qila is an upscale formal dining restaurant located in one of the prime properties in Karachi. Lal Qila means ‘red fort’ and the restaurant draws its inspiration from the Red Fort in Delhi. A vivid and conspicuous realization of the glory of our brilliant esthetical essence. All the way a combination and innovation. Adorned with courtesy of mughlai era Lal Qila offer you to dine out authentic Mughlai , Tandori , Live Bar-B-Que & Traditional Pakistani cuisine.

The simplicity of salads

December 24th, 2010 khawar No comments

Harini_foodSome say it is rabbit food but the truth is, it is great for human beings too.  I cannot survive only on it but I cannot survive without it either!

If rightly prepared, no meal can be as wholesome as a salad.  It is the simplest of dishes, yet a poor dressing can completely ruin the taste, crunch and freshness of a salad.  A couple of months back my daughter and I had opted for a 15-day raw vegan diet, and it was during this period that I realised how salads could be ‘the meal’ instead of just a plateful of sliced raw vegetables, sprinkled with salt and pepper, that people pick on and then move onto the next course of the meal.  I found that salads could be fun and healthy if only we give it a little variation in terms of dressing and presentation.  The dressing can be just salt and pepper with a squeeze of lime as we do on most days, but that can get monotonous.  Try varying the flavours or the dressing and adding some nuts or dried fruits and you will find that it can transform into the most interesting dish on the table, apart from keeping that waistline intact.

I have a repertoire of dressings I play with, my favourite being Italian inspired Asian salads. I also like to mix in slivers of soft dates or carrots or halved raisins to introduce mild sweetness.

Restaurant review: Abdul Ghaffar Kabab House

October 14th, 2010 Yousuf Rafi 2 comments
Eating out is one my most favorite things to do. Either it is with family or with friends I love to try out new restaurants every time we go out.  Recently heard about this new restaurant in Karachi Abdul Ghaffar Kabab House (in Tariq Road near Naheed Super Market ) and went there for a change. Well it was Sunday; public was there so we waited for around 20 minutes or so. They had all the basics like sekh kabab, malai boti, reshimi kabab, chicken tikka….menu list was on going. We ordered Chicken tikka, Malai Boti and Reshmi Kabab and started waiting for our order.
Due to excessive public our order came a bit late but it was expected. So talking about the quality… well salad was there but the chatni had no taste at all. On the other hand Chicken tikka (please note that leg piece was more tasty than breast piece) was good, no much spicy and tasty. Reshmi kabab were very soft and tasty and Malati boti was also as per expectations.
I was all done when my brother ordered the halwa (he prefers something sweet with every meal). I tasted this halwa and trust me, can’t explain my feelings; it was out of this world. Tried many halwa’s but this was different; not so sweet but so very tasty. So even without any intension I ate 2 parath’s with this halwa…. A must try if you want to miss the best halwa in Karachi I guess.
Yes I enjoyed every bit of it. Not so expensive serving 4 persons in Rs. 1,000 only. So if you are planning for a dine out with your family and friends my recommendation is for Abdul Ghaffar Kabab House. Do share your experience here… would love to hear from you.
