12 Common Work Email Mistakes

July 13th, 2011 Yousuf Rafi 1 comment

Email mistakes1. Failing to include basic greetings.

Simple pleasantries do the trick. Say “hi” at the start of the message and “thanks” at the end. Be sure to use the recipient’s name. Be polite yet brief with your courtesy.

2. Expecting an instant response.

Don’t send an email and show up at the recipient’s desk 30 seconds later asking if they’ve received it. They did, and they’ll answer at their convenience. That’s the point of email.

3. Sending before you mean to.

Enter the recipient’s email address only when your email is ready to be sent. This helps reduce the risk of an embarrassing misfire, such as sending an important email to the wrong person or emailing a half-written note.

4. Not reviewing all new messages before replying.

When you return to the office after being away, review all new emails before firing off responses. It might be hard to accept, but odds are, things did march on without you. Replying to something that was already handled by a co-worker can lead to confusion, errors, and wasted time.

5. Omitting recipients when you “reply all.”

Unless there’s an important reason to omit someone, don’t arbitrarily leave people off the response if they were included on the original message.

Five gadgets that will be dead in five years

May 13th, 2011 medigineers 1 comment

If there’s one thing that’s predictable in the technology world, it’s that things change. Products that were commonplace ten years ago (PDAs, CRT televisions, fax machines) are quickly fading with the sands of time.

Today, there are many products we take for granted that will likely be dead in five years. Whether their features are being subsumed by other products or they are falling victim to changing business models, their days are numbered. Sure you may still find some quaint reminders in the back of SkyMall’s Late Spring 2016 catalog, but for all intents and purposes they will be gone.

In-car portable navigation systems

portable_carWhy they’re going extinct: Today, portable navigations devices from Garmin, TomTom and Magellan are a common sight on car dashboards and windshields. But everything the portable navigation systems can do, smartphones can do as well, if not better. And one of the best smartphone nav apps, Google Maps Navigation, is free. So it should be no surprise that portable navigation system sales dropped 22 percent in 2010. And it should be no surprise in five years when they’re gone entirely.

Top 10 Headache Remedies and Cures

April 16th, 2011 ChaiWala 1 comment

Headache RemediesWhen a headache strikes suddenly, it’s not just painful, it’s downright infuriating! The pain can feel like just a tiny pinch at first, but given enough time, that pinch turns into a sledgehammer that keeps pounding away at your head until you can’t stand it anymore. Luckily though, you don’t have to just sit there and take it like you have in the past — you’ve got options, the best of all being fast acting, natural headache remedies & cures.

You and I both know that headache relief medication — such as aspirin — is becoming increasingly more UNRELIABLE to heal your headache pain. Not one day goes by where we don’t see a commercial about how a drug was recalled because it caused SERIOUS side effects or even death. Having said that, it’s only getting more foolish with each new day to turn to pills in order to get headache relief.

Most people don’t realize it, but NATURAL headache remedies and cures are the best way to go about treating headaches quickly and SAFELY. In fact, you can actually heal your headache in as little as 5 to 10 minutes so long as you’re using the right headache cures. Don’t believe it? Well, then you’ve obviously never tried using these 10 outstanding headache remedies. Take a look.

10 Easy Remedies That Can Heal Your Headache Fast…

1. Large Glass of Water. Sounds too easy, right? Well it works more often then you think. Dehydration is one of the MOST COMMON causes of headaches, so a glass of cool, clear water might be all you need to start relieving pain.

2. Deep Massage. You probably already know about massages and how they help to relieve stress & tension. However, what you didn’t likely know is that a firm massage on the head, face, AND neck can quickly get rid of headache pain.

Word Usage: 10 Common Mistakes

April 14th, 2011 Yousuf Rafi 4 comments

Microsoft Word MistakesMistakes are often made with word usage. Unfortunately, it’s not something that can always be remedied with spell checker.

Here is a list of ten common word usage mistakes with explanations and examples of proper use:

  1. There vs. Their vs. They’reThere is an indication of location.
Example: I want to see that book over there.

Their is a possessive version of they.
Example: They took their dog to the groomer.

They’re is a contraction, short for they are.
Example: They’re going to the theatre tonight.

  2. A lot vs. Allot vs. AlotA lot is an indication of amount.
Example: I have a lot of laundry to do.

    Allot means to distribute.
Example: I will allot you two cookies.

    Alot is not a word.

  3. I.e. vs. E.g.I.e. means “in other words.”
Example: Writing more articles increases your website traffic. I.e., it will bring you more exposure.

    E.g. means “for example.”
Example: I have a lot of chores to do. E.g., laundry, dishes, vacuuming, dusting, etc.

7 kinds of Annoying Pakistanis on Facebook

April 5th, 2011 Yousuf Rafi 4 comments

With the popularity of Facebook having risen, Pakistanis haven’t been far behind in using it. No, leave ‘Leave far behind!’ They’ve flooded the site to such an extent that I believe Mark Zuckerberg should keep a quota for the percentage of Pakistanis on facebook! So here’s my take on the 7 obvious, and ridiculously annoying types:

1. The Rohndoos:

crying_babyThese are the ones who just cannot help but keep crying and whining on and about how sad/bad or unfair life and this world is to them. They are prone to updating statuses like the following everyday:

“I Fe3L LyK crYing! I h@te ma lyfe!”

“So0o lonely! Nobody cares about me! I jus d0nt want 2 live!!”

“My life SUxxx!”

“I want to end ma life!”

(Yes please, go ahead and spare us this torture)

They, I firmly believe, are people who used to keep the lyrics  ‘Zindagi Nay Zindagi Bhar Ghum Diay” as their MSN ‘nick’ with the picture of a slashed wrist, with the oozing blood spelling ‘Heart-broken’ and have now graced us with their pleasant presence on Facebook.
