From White Days to Black Days – every nation celebrates a day of love

Although, February 14 worldwide is marked as a the International Valentine’s Day, but you may be surprised to know – or it may just add to your knowledge – that some nationalities or nations celebrate days of love or romance on alternate days to February 14.For eg, in Iran, couples celebrate their romantic day not on Feb 14, but on February 17.

This is because their traditional day of love called Sepandārmazgān – a local traditional day of celebration of love that goes back to the ancient Persian folklore of Zoroastrian tradition. It is celebrated on the 29th of Bahman of the Persian calendar. The corresponding date of this calendar this year will be on 17 February – just three days of the international day of romance.

Similarly, in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea, March 14 is celebrated as the local Valentine’s Day but with a name change – it is called White Day.

White Day came about when in March the National Confectionery Industry Association in Japan decided to celebrate the giving of gifts by women to men. Hence, the Association decided to make March 14 as the giving back day and marketed marshmallows to men as giving back gifts to their women counterparts. Initially, it was called the Marshmallow Day but later on, was changed to the ‘White Day. white-day-marshmellows.gif
In response to White Day, certain quarters in South Korea started a Black Day on April 14. Black Day took its name from the black bean sauce served on top of traditional Korean noodles that singles eat when get together. This day was initiated to help the singles to find partners or just to make friends. black-day-noodle-with-bla.gif
